Ghana is the safest, friendliest, most affordable, English speaking country in Africa. Situated in the heart of West Africa, five degrees north of the equator, Ghana is a warm, tropical country with 540km of scenic palm-fringed beaches and the friendliest people in all Africa. Ghana enjoys lush forests and jungles in the south and vast savannahs in the north. Scenic highland ranges ensure abundant precipitation and the greenest vegetation in the region. Ghana has a tropical climate. As a guide, November to February is the official dry season. There are two wet seasons, March to July when Ghana is at its greenest and September to October. Temperature ranges between 21-32 degrees centigrade. |

| What Qualifications Are Necessary To Become a Volunteer? |
|
To participate in the Teach a School in Ghana Voluntary Programme you need not necessarily be a teacher or a student teacher to volunteer in this programme but any college student or a university graduate whether you are looking for a chance to travel during a career break, or simply a volunteer vacation or any one who want to experience another culture like never before and really get to know its people. Then you really have to get involve in this programme. Through this, you will experience Africa while making meaningful contribution in the life of the future leaders of a community.
Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age, in good health, willing to teach; willing to live in simple living conditions and should be able to communicate in English. Other than these modest requirements, there are no other qualifications necessary to become a FANVO volunteer under this programme.

| What do I need to know about Ghanaian Schools? |
|
GHANAIAN SCHOOLS
Ghanaian students go to school five days a week. Your teaching schedule may not include every day of the week. Schools generally start between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and finish around 2:30 p.m. Some schools also run a shift from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
THE ACADEMIC CALANDER
First term --- September to December
Second term --- January to March
Third term --- May to August
School holidays vary from 3-5 weeks for Christmas and Easter holidays. Volunteers will need to keep this in mind when deciding on a time period to volunteer for participating in the programme.
LOCATION
Student-teachers or volunteers will be able to choose rural or urban schools. Certain regions in Ghana are in more need of teachers than others are. Student-teachers with some teaching experience (such as having done their student teaching in their home country) may be placed with schools that are lacking a sufficient number of teachers. These placements are only in rural areas and are often fairly remote. Therefore, this will only be done if the student request such a placement.
ACCOMMODATION
FANVO will arrange for student-teachers or volunteers to be place in a home-stay, preferable with someone from the school with which they are associated. Another type of accommodation could be a school bungalow in the school premises or few yards away. Others could be independent accommodation

| What will I Get out Of My Volunteer Experience with FANVO? |
|
The answer to this question, of course, depends on how much you put in. If you enter fully into the work and make an effort to understand and make friends with the volunteers from many other cultures, you will have an interesting and enjoyable experience by working. You will make friends from countries all over the world, you will learn to do work you have never done before, you will learn important organizational and management skills, you will be introduced to a completely different part of the world, and you will learn about different cultures. More than all of this, you will have the satisfaction of having worked with others on a project to help a community in need.

OUR RESOURCES TOGETHER
We believe pooling our resources together is another interesting way of contributing positively towards the work camp. This may give that feeling of satisfaction that you are an integral part of the group. And also as a means to forfeit the expenses that would be incurred by renting these items locally we therefore appeal to all volunteers who have some of these logistics to lend them for use in the work camp. All items given under this condition are given back to the owner after the break of camp, except you will want to donate it to FANVO.
LOGISTICS THAT ARE MOST OFTEN NEEDED FOR THE WORKCAMPS
Electronic projectors and screen
Digital cameras
Lap top computers
Documentaries VCD/DVD, books, leaflets on AIDS/HIV

By connecting volunteers from diverse cultures in Ghana and abroad we provide opportunities to overcome prejudice and cultural misunderstandings. Through tangible work projects and the challenges of group living situations, volunteers and local communities create a more positive and hopeful vision of themselves, their world and the future. |
